Easter and Lambing - April 2025

“……I’m able to check all the sheep in a morning and get jobs done in the afternoon……”  Will Dale

Introduction

As the mornings get brighter and the days grow longer, Easter arrives with its themes of renewal, joy and, for most sheep farmers, exhaustion. This season holds special significance—it marks the height of lambing season, a time of hard work, excitement, and the miracle of new beginnings.

The Connection Between Easter and Lambs

Lambs have long been associated with Easter, both for their symbolism and their presence in seasonal feasts historically. In Christian traditions, the lamb represents purity, sacrifice, and redemption, and is traditionally linked to the Passover celebration. Across the world, many families enjoy lamb as part of their Easter Sunday meal, honouring both cultural heritage and the abundance which Spring brings (did someone say mint sauce?).

Supporting Local Farmers This Easter

As Easter approaches, it is a wonderful time to support local farmers and producers. Whether you are sourcing fresh lamb for a family meal, visiting a local farm to see lambing in action, or simply appreciating the dedication that goes into sheep farming, your support makes a real difference.

Check out some of Shropshire’s finest farm shops and butchers where you can purchase local produce to support your neighbour and elevate your Easter feast:

For many, lambing is a time of long days and even longer nights, filled with moments of anticipation, triumph and sometimes challenge – and so it used to be for Hayden, who made the change to Easycare wool shedding sheep 10 years ago and has had fewer grey hairs ever since! Updating us on this year’s lambing Hayden said, “I estimate that we are 70% lambed and 60% sheared already thanks to the warm weather”

“Ewes actively seek shelter to lamb so lamb survival is excellent and it’s all because….”
